A model minority, based on definition, is a minority group (whether based on ethnicity, race or religion) whose members are perceived to achieve a higher degree of socioeconomic success than the population average. In America, this term is usually associated with East Asians and South Asians (mostly Indians) because of their ability to succeed educationally, socially, and economically when comparing to other minority groups. Indeed, Asian Americans have been the fastest growing racial group, four times rapidly, as a total U.S population. There are a lots statistics showing that most Asian Americans have highest- income and almost 50% of Asian Americans have bachelor’s degree or higher level of education. They are often perceived and categorized as hard working citizens that represent the reality of American dream. In recent time, many Asian Americans have felt that the model minority idea is perpetuating positive stereotypes that do not depict the full picture of Asian American lives In America.
Many people in America have misconceptions of all Asian Americans being healthy, wealthy and wise, which cause the society to overlook the struggles that many other Asian Americans face daily. There are not many statistics that show that there are lots of Asian Americans who are enrolled in community colleges rather than Ivy League, and there are lots of Asian Americans who are unemployed. In some cases, there is a great struggle among Asian Americans battling with positive stereotypes. These stereotypes usually are harmfull to the group of Asian Americans who are not doing well education and economic wise because it keeps them from getting necessary attention from the government. Many people are not aware of that not all Asian Americans have the privilege of becoming wealthy and healthy because of the so-called positive stereotypes that had existed for a long time. The other problem with the idea of model minority as Susan Hayase, Japanese American writer, said is “it was manufacture to justify racism against African Americans while offering second-class citizen to Asian Americans.’’ The model minority concept is formed to hold African American responsible for the struggles and the problems they go in their life.
The idea of model minority is partly myth because it is reinforcing stereotypes of Asian Americans and leading other citizens to have misconception about Asian Americans that are not true. It is also preventing many people from seeing the hardship that Asian Americans and other minorities face for not having the privilege that white people have.
